On and off for the last 10 years, anytime I went to get my nails done, I would opt for Shellac polish. I’d walk out of the salon (after not even having to wait for it to dry!) and it would last a good 2-3 weeks without chipping. It was amazing!!!!
My nails felt super strong during those two weeks, until it was time to remove the polish. I had to soak them in acetone and then the nail technician would scrape the polish off. That was ALWAYS my least favorite part, but I reminded myself that beauty is pain.
But around March of 2018 I started making some big changes. I started looking deeper into ingredients I was putting on and in my body. As sad as I was to admit it, I had to part from my beloved Shellac. I knew it wasn’t good for me and that the 2-3 weeks of perfect polish wasn’t worth the UV lights and chemicals. A 2012 study found that gel manicures like Shellac cause significant brittleness, weakness, and thinning. After the manicure and removal, the nails of some of the subjects were 50% thinner!*
But then I had a problem. My nails were SO weak!! The scraping, the acetone and the polish meant for the side of a boat took a toll on them. They would break daily and they were extremely brittle. But I really didn’t want to go back to Shellac.
Enter collagen. Liquid collagen**, to be exact. When I started taking it for my back pain, I started noticing it helping my hair, skin and nails. My precious nails!!!
It took about a month for them to really start growing, and another month for them to get noticeably stronger. There was a HUGE difference from that last Shellac removal until now. Now a regular manicure lasts me longer than it ever did, because my nails underneath are stronger so the polish chips less easily.
